FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the core beliefs of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ?

Since emerging from Third Baptist Church in 1990, Canaan Baptist Church of Christ remains a Baptist church by tradition. While the Baptist church itself is split into various sub-denominations, all Baptists hold some fundamental core beliefs in common. These include:

Baptism. We believe that full immersion water baptism is an important act of obedience in faith. While it is not the source of or necessary for salvation, it is an outward and public expression of faith of those in the church once you have professed Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. We believe that the instruction for baptism can be found in Matthew 28:19 (KJV), which says "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost".  The importance of this symbolic act of immersive baptism is also laid out for us in Romans 6:3-4 (KJV), where it is written "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life".

The Lord's Supper. Like baptism, the taking of communion is an important act of obedience in faith for the church. We find this in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (KJV) "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come".

The Authority of the Bible. We believe that the Bible is divinely inspired, and that it is the only authority for Christian faith and practice. We see in 2 Timothy 3:16-17(KJV) that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works".
